Shanty – Blackout

1617192_496848917088173_1649588312_oWith more than a hint of The Police lingering around them, Shanty have their own say on modern reggae with ‘Blackout‘ which has one of the best music videos I’ve seen from an unsigned band in a long time.

Brass echoes out throughout the infectious chorus in which the song’s title takes centre stage as it is screamed as if from the rooftops by vocalist Ben Willis. Willis has an excellent voice for this sort of sound, he comes across as laid back and casual whilst maintaining the presence and strength necessary to take control of such a lively beast. As you might expect, the bass plays a hugely important role in the song – Jake Butler clearly has command of his instrument and some of the basslines used are melodic patches of brilliance.

Working well as a unit, with keyboards and brass contributing excellent stabs, each member of Shanty contributes to the melting pot of energy and passion that results in such an inspirational infusion as ‘Blackout‘. While it may be a timely reminder of the consequences of excess, ‘Blackout‘ is a feel-good anthem that will have you up and skanking in no time.
