As if he’s come to the table fully-equipped for a Wild West shootout, Ed Ling brings Americana spirit to the UK via a rural Suffolk church, a former chocolate factory and a Mexican beach. Because why the hell not?
This particular track from the album caught my ear thanks to the dark undertones that suggest that there’s a little more to these sounds than meets the eye. By retaining a level of confusion, Ling is able to get away with fair standard musical procedure in the foreground as he relies on melodies and harmonies that we’ve heard time after time. That extra element of darkness gives him an edge over most of these acoustic folk-pop troubadours as it just makes him a damn sight more interesting. Sure, there might not be a lot of new sounds in this track but we all love a nice slice of familiarity every once in a while, it lets us know that there are still plenty of people out their following some of the great musical traditions.
Tailor-made for an imaginary film soundtrack, this is a great track to mosey on down the road to.
