Though the idea of visiting a barber at midnight may seem a tad disconcerting, I’d have no qualms about spending an evening in the company of the infectious sounds of The Midnight Barbers. Their latest track ‘Business’ is full of old-school rock and roll that will have your feet shuffling as a gruff lead vocal gets your blood pumping faster through your veins.
This is high-intensity skiffle, as if Lonnie Donegan had had a brief flirtation with punk before returning to his roots, equipped with a striking new hairstyle not unlike Vivian from The Young Ones (anyone? No?). The track is kept alive by the sheer energy within the drums as they guide your feet around the room, leaving the Hank Marvin-esque guitar sounds and gruff vocals to break on through to your rebellious side. There are sounds of several decades gone by entwined within the song and it’s a hell of a lot more than your standard 12-bar blues. This is definitely not all business, there’s far too much fun being had and these are the perfect sounds to kick away the cobwebs.
It’s definitely time to get your dancing boots on. Give your barber a call and let him know that you’ve found someone new. I’m sure he’ll understand.
