There’s something decidedly chilling about the opening bars of this track from the mightily named Hunck. It feels as though it’s the perfect song for a teenage rebellion film, fitting in smoothly just at the point where our avid hero realises he’s made a big mistake. Or perhaps a friendship is breaking apart and it plays over a montage of two close allies going their separate ways.
You can conjure up your own vivid imagery when listening to the song yet there’s a definite narrative lacing the lyrics as they tell tales, possibly of sorrow and missed opportunities. It could be just the right song for one of those episodes of One Tree Hill where there was a big message or major plot point, not the one with the guy with a gun in the school obviously but one of the more emotional twists such as the reaction to important news like a basketball scholarship or whatever that show was actually about. I never got really into it truth be told. I’ve got a lot of time for the lengthy instrumental outro in ‘Something Missing‘, not to say that the vocals are anything less than stellar but there’s a chill rapidly manoeuvring down my spine as I close my eyes and let the aural imagery cloud my mind.
I can’t get enough of Hunck‘s sounds, their entire EP is absolutely brilliant but it is undoubtedly the title track stealing the show as it is jam-packed with emotions whilst maintaining an heir which seems like the sonic version of the word ‘meh’. This is far from ‘meh’. Very far indeed.
