The August September – Paint The Future

Screen shot 2015-03-20 at 16.00.36The opening track from the Transitions EP, this little ripper from The August September has an atmospheric vibe to it that’s not a million miles away from that of The XX or Temper Trap – the twin male and female vocals do indeed bring about a reminiscence of everything that makes the former so incredible.

Whilst the harmonies may be rather special, it’s the guitar riffs that really stand out in my mind as they remain relatively straightforward yet there’s something brilliant about the way that they take all the other instruments into account rather than simply smashing through the walls and performing as is this were a virtuoso outfit (though I don’t doubt that the guitarist is indeed more than capable!). It’s a little darker than your standard atmospheric indie offering but it sits nicely in that empty hole between my ears and it feels like the music is beckoning in the evening as it plunges you into this dark, constricting world.

The rest of the EP is well worth checking out but this seems like a very strong place to start, there’s no surprise that this is the lead track – it would be hard to stop after just one song that’s this good.
