I don’t know if I’ve ever heard a voice before that has screamed out a certain genre at me yet finds itself doing a stellar job of absolutely dominating a completely different sound. There’s a subtlety to BERRIES lead vocalist Holly Carter’s voice that suggests she would be an insanely successful folk singer yet I’m ruddy glad that she’s turned to the dark side of indie rock as it makes for one of the most distinctive voices in indie that I’ve heard in a rather long time.
The rest of the band settles in nicely too – there’s some catchy hi-hat play on offer for anyone with a cymbal obsession and the fairly formulaic workings of the guitar and bass are exactly the sort of thing that you’ll be looking for if you love a bit of pure rocky goodness. But once again, it’s undoubtedly that lead vocal that sets the band apart and they’re one of the hottest looking prospects on the guitar-led London scene at the moment. If you like what you hear as much as I do, they’re at Camden’s Barfly on 23rd January.
Go on, get yourself down there – if they sound this good on the record this lot can only be an absolute stormer to see live.
