I got suckered in by the warmth of the bass, then I stayed because everything else was just as beautiful. The latest sounds from Soffía Björg are some of the most intriguing I’ve come across as – by doing what seems like nothing at all – she’s able to draw out more emotion than even the weepiest of films.
It’s the tenderness of it all, the fact that everything is so delicately poised that even the slightest hint of a bum note would wreck the whole thing. But there’s no sign of anything like that for miles and miles. With a slow, measured approach the Icelandic genius once more is able to hang you on tenterhooks, waiting on each beat for just another small hit that you promise yourself will be your last but you know you’re not going to be able to quit this. For the love of god, don’t listen to this when you’ve got a hangover/are on a comedown because it’ll have you in pieces on the floor screaming for your loved ones. Hearing the words “mum and dad are so proud, but you already know” alone are enough to set off the waterworks for anyone who has a healthy relationship with their parents.
Give this a listen, get all emotional then give your parents a call to tell them how much you love this. OH GOD – THERE’S SOMETHING IN MY EYE!!!
