Like one of Nick Cave’s filthiest bits, this new corker from Laura Carbone sees itself surrounded in darkness and is able to strike pure fear into the hearts of all those who oppose it within the briefest of instants. Fresh off the back of a tour with shoegaze heroes The Jesus And Mary Chain, you can tell within the first few seconds of ‘Cellophane Skin‘ that this is someone you need to keep an eye on.
I guess in principle having skin made out of cellophane might not exactly be ideal, surely even a splinter would cause endless agony? But there’s no pain to be had while you’re plugged in to this beauty – it’s genuinely one of my favourite tracks of the year so far. Perhaps it’s the whole brilliantly creepy sound of the band or the way in which the vocals entice you like that ‘last cigarette’ you’ve forever dreamed of. Whatever it is, this simply can’t be made of this world and there’s some mighty fine sorcery at hand from the Berlin-based musical genius.
This is so top drawer it should probably be kept under lock and key so that it doesn’t get pierced. Then again, you NEED this so unwrap it double lively.
