Keen to prove she’s not a stand-in any more, Anna Tosh gets nice and post-punk with her latest tune ‘Edge Of Cool‘. Keeping things nice and stripped back, the tune relies on Tosh’s ability to write a solid riff to see it sail right around the edges of the cool sphere. Whatever that means.
With a voice that’s stark and honest, the track doesn’t spend time trying to wine and dine you with unnecessary frivolities and uses the fact that it’s actually a decent tune rather than anything else to pull you in. I visited the edge of cool once for a day trip and it was surprisingly bleak as the sun refused to shine and the bags of candy floss they had on sale were severely overpriced. In hindsight, it might have been Margate. Who can tell? Anyway, the slick sounds on this wee ripper come from a sense of unease and there are several hints at darker undertones as you stare a somewhat disparaging tale in the face.
Still, a solid track has come out of it and it’ll get you all mixed up if you’re not careful enough.
